Blood Sustainability

Blood transfusion is an essential, life-saving treatment required by thousands of patients each day. The blood supply is an irreplaceable, essential public health resource and the blood system infrastructure is critical to our ability to respond to emerging infectious diseases, natural disasters and emergencies. AABB is committed to advancing policy solutions that strengthen the nation’s blood supply and the vein-to-vein infrastructure that supports it.

Policy Priorities

  1. Promote blood transfusions as essential, life-saving treatments.
  2. Support a sustainable blood system as a critical component of the healthcare system.
  3. Encourage regular blood donation as needed to maintain a stable supply of safe blood with sufficient capacity to respond to emerging infectious diseases, disasters and emergencies.
  4. Support patients’ access to matched, specific blood types as well as universal blood components.
