Anemia in prospective blood donors may indicate an underlying disease, may result in an ineffective transfusion product, and may cause harm to the recipient. Red cells are the most-transfused blood component; measurement of the donor hemoglobin level to determine donor eligibility is, therefore, of paramount importance. This Guide updates the previous publication on the topic (2007) and details the advantages, disadvantages, technical aspects, and quality assurance considerations for each of several methods currently in use to ascertain the donor hemoglobin level.
