BUNDLE: Standards for Perioperative Autologous Blood Collection and Administration, 11th edition – Print and Guidance

This combination provides two ways to access the 11th edition of Standards for Perioperative Autologous Blood Collection and Administration (Perioperative Standards): print and electronic. This edition of Perioperative Standards, effective January 1, 2025, contains requirements that address perioperative collection and preparation of red cell and non-red cell components. Its goal is to maintain and enhance the quality and safety of perioperative autologous blood collection and administration and to provide a basis for the AABB Accreditation Program. It reflects the concerns and priorities of several different aspects of the discipline, including the input of recognized experts in the field and the best interests of their patients. It was developed in the context of the global drive for quality in health care and internationally recognized principles of quality management.

Significant changes to the 11th edition:

• The updated Quality Systems Essentials template has been incorporated into the 11th edition, including updated language and new sections on key concepts, key terms, and examples of objective evidence.
• New Standard 4.2.4 requires that all programs define agreements for all third-party providers of contracted services.
• New Standards 5.1.10.1 – 5.1.10.3 address proficiency testing referrals, associated communications, and notifications to CMS.
• New Standard 5.3.2 provides minimum criteria for performing acute normovolemic hemodilution.
• New Standard 5.3.4 provides minimum criteria for the collection and administration of platelet-rich plasma.
• New Standard 7.3.4 provides details under what circumstances a perioperative collection can be restarted once the investigation of a potential adverse event has taken place.

Guidance for Standards for Perioperative Autologous Blood Collection and Administration, 10th edition, includes verbatim requirements from the Perioperative Standards interspersed with guidance. Language from the Perioperative Standards is presented; when there is appropriate guidance for that standard, the guidance language follows the standard with the heading "Guidance." This format allows the reader to see both the requirement and the associated guidance side by side.

Please note that there is no guidance for some standards. The Perioperative Standards Committee has chosen to focus Guidance for Standards for Perioperative Autologous Blood Collection and Administration on those issues that may require additional context and/or examples to assist in attaining compliance with the Standards.
