Transfusion reactions can be challenging due to the ambiguous nature of the presenting signs and symptoms. This simple vignette is designed to provide stepwise guidance in diagnosing a transfusion reaction in a clinical setting. The case study begins with details on the patient’s presentation, followed by initial test results. Those results guide the decisions on further investigative procedures performed for reaching a correct diagnosis and treatment. Feedback provided on choices made along the way will 1) introduce standard definitions in the National Healthcare Safety Network protocol and 2) increase an understanding of the process for reaching a definitive diagnosis.
