One cannot assume that adequate and safe blood transfusion will seamlessly “happen” in health-care delivery unless we pay deliberate attention to how we educate and train health-care professionals, and how we staff our facilities. Laboratories in low-, middle-, and high-income countries suffer from persistent resource limitations of one kind or another—medical technologists, equipment, work environments, and career structures—all of which ultimately affect the quality and accuracy of test results.

The intended audience for this book is physicians, students, clinical trainees, nurses, medical technologists, transfusion safety officers, phlebotomists, and blood administrators. It should be of particular value to transfusionists actively engaged in teaching as well as for self-directed learners.
