I've been with AABB since July 2023. It's a unique experience; sometimes it feels like I've been here much longer, while other times it seems like I just started!
I serve as the vice president, biotherapies. My role involves ensuring AABB supports our members who are biotherapies professionals and identifying new opportunities for AABB to leverage its expertise and capabilities to help grow the biotherapies field around the world.
AABB's impact on blood banking and transfusion medicine is remarkable, and it's been just as influential in the field of cell therapy for nearly 30 years. I couldn't pass on the opportunity to contribute to such a significant association. Plus, every AABB member I've met speaks highly of their affiliation, which is incredibly inspiring.
Before joining AABB, I spent 12 years with NMDP, also known as Be The Match, an organization dedicated to providing cell therapy cures. My involvement in expanding NMDP's capabilities into biotherapies gave me invaluable experience in how to extend established programs into the growing cell and gene therapy market.
I'm originally from Minneapolis, Minn., and I still reside there with my family—my wife, three kids and our dog. However, I spent a significant part of my 20s in Madison and Milwaukee, Wisc. If I could live anywhere in the world, I think it might be Minnesota, or maybe Western Ireland.
The positive impact and the potential for an even larger impact of our work is a constant motivator. The dynamic nature of the job and the continuous learning opportunities from my colleagues keep me engaged.
Be curious and respectfully question why things are done a certain way. Innovation and advancements often come from those who aren't afraid to ask questions and propose new ideas.
I’ve been working with AABB’s marketing and education teams to expand the Certified Advanced Biotherapies Professional (CABP) certification’s reach beyond the current AABB membership.
Becoming a CABP is a mark of distinction, establishing that qualified professionals have demonstrated – through a certification exam – that they have the necessary knowledge to credibly practice in the field of biotherapies.
I’ve also been engaging in many meetings and conferences to showcase AABB’s various offerings in the biotherapies space. These events are exciting because I get to see how the biotherapies field responds to AABB, and then work to make sure our offerings fit their needs in order to advance the field.
