Infectious diseases present a potential risk to the transfusion recipient and may impact the safety and adequacy of the blood supply. To protect both donor and patient health, all donors must meet eligibility requirements specified by the Food and Drug Administration and by AABB Standards and Accreditation Programs.
Donor eligibility is determined based on pre-donation donor screening with the Donor History Questionnaire, followed by additional testing. The post-donation testing of donor’s blood is performed before blood and blood components can be labeled for distribution. These critical, overlapping steps reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted infection for the patient.
