Kathryn “Kay” McCurdy, a dedicated blood banker and former AABB division director,
died Oct. 27. McCurdy began her blood banking career as a research technologist at the University of Texas. In 1970, she joined the American Red Cross, where she advanced to become director of regulatory affairs for the national blood program. McCurdy later joined AABB, retiring in 1996 as division director for technical and regulatory services.
McCurdy was a founding co-editor of
Blood Bank Regulations, A to Z, with four editions published by the AABB Press. In 1998, she received AABB’s W. Quinn Jordan Memorial Award (now the
Hemphill-Jordan Leadership Award), citing "her long-standing, practical leadership in the area of regulatory control and compliance.”
