Red Blood Cells
As Independence Day approaches in the United States, some blood bank managers are increasing efforts to import O-negative blood to ensure adequate supply during the holiday. While supplies of other blood types remain stable, this period often marks the transition from a national surplus in mid-June to the seasonal shortages that characterize summer, often prompting urgent appeals for donations.
The demand for most types of fresh frozen plasma is addressed immediately – often within 24 hours. Type AB is the usual exception, with successful searches taking 24 hours (versus 48 hours two weeks ago). Cryoprecipitate products are flourishing.
