Blood Products Availability

January 29, 2025

Blood Products Availability is published biweekly on the AABB Newsfeed and in Weekly Report. This estimate is based on data from AABB's National Blood Exchange and is intended to complement the weekly Group O blood supply report.

Platelets
All known usage of platelets is being met by strong national surplus.

Red Blood Cells
Most Rh-positive units are readily available. However, the availability of O-negative RBCs remains seasonally low and is trending lower due to wide-impact events, including the California wildfires. Right now, most demand is being met within 48 hours. However, there is growing concern that the use of O-negative units will significantly outpace availability in the coming days.

Frozen Products

There is an uptick in demand for type B plasma. The use of types A and AB plasma is nearly balanced with availability. Support for types A and B is received within 48 hours, but several days are needed for type AB. National inventories of single and pooled cryoprecipitate are strong. All known demand is being served in under 48 hours.
