Blood Products Availability is published biweekly on the AABB Newsfeed and in Weekly Report. This estimate is based on data from AABB's National Blood Exchange.
National availability of platelets is strong. All known needs met within 24 hours. However, a recent snowstorm impacting multiple states across country may create delays in the timely release and distribution of platelets.
While A-positive and B-positive blood remains plentiful, the availability of type O blood has decreased sharply in the past week, consistent with seasonal wintertime levels. Availability of types A-negative and B-negative are also trending lower. As overnight delivery carriers come back online, same-day delivery services are often a costlier but welcome solution for those needing to import products after this high-impact weather event.
An uptick in the use of cryoprecipitate products is being supported by waning national availability. Types O and B fresh-frozen plasma (FFP) are plentiful, readily addressing all known usage. Demand for type A FFP is well met due to solid national availability, but the demand for AB FFP exceeds availability.
