AABB Employee Spotlight May 2024: Becca Newburg

How long have you been at AABB?

I joined AABB in April 2024.

What is your job title? What does your job entail?

My role as sales and business development manager, biotherapies, involves supporting AABB’s products and services for the biotherapies field. This includes our Corporate Partner Program, the Certified Advanced Biotherapies Professional (CABP) credentialing program, standards and accreditations, and more. My aim is to aid both AABB members and non-members in effectively achieving their goals by leveraging AABB’s offerings.

What made you interested in pursuing a career at AABB?

The opportunity to contribute to AABB's mission of improving lives by making transfusion medicine and biotherapies safe, available, and effective truly resonated with me. I've always wanted a career that was aligned with a meaningful mission, and AABB's commitment to this cause played a huge role in my decision to join the organization.

How did your previous work experience prepare you for your current role at AABB?

My background as a technical account manager in the cell therapy manufacturing sector provided valuable insights into the field of cellular therapies and biotherapies. Throughout this experience, I fell in love with the people, the passion and the science behind cell therapies. This has equipped me well for my role with AABB by giving me a solid understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within the biotherapies space.

Where are you from? Where do you live now? Where would you live if you could live anywhere?

I grew up in a small Boston suburb and am currently living in the Twin Cities in Minnesota. Although I have been living in the Midwest for about seven years, I am still a New Englander at heart. If I could live anywhere, I’d love to move back to Massachusetts and into a waterfront house on Cape Cod.

What motivates you at work?

I find motivation in knowing that my contributions play a part in improving health and patient outcomes, particularly by enhancing accessibility and quality-of-life-saving therapies for patients. While my role in business development may seem several steps removed from direct patient care, I recognize the vital role that our products and services play in advancing outcomes and saving lives.

What are your top tips for someone starting off their career?

My advice for those just starting off in their careers is to embrace the idea that values, career goals and aspirations are subject to change over time—and that's perfectly fine! It's important to explore different paths, discover your strengths, and be open to pivoting when necessary to align with personal and professional growth.

Describe some of the projects you have been working on at AABB so far. What do you find exciting about them?

At the moment, I am heavily focused on helping promote and grow AABB’s Certified Advanced Biotherapies Professional (CABP) credentialing program, making it accessible to biotherapies individuals and organizations worldwide. The CABP aims to establish minimum standards of competence, identify qualified and proficient professionals, and advance safety and quality of cellular and biotherapies.

Become a Certificated Advanced Biotherapies Professional (CABP)

Becoming a CABP is a mark of distinction, establishing that qualified professionals have demonstrated – through a certification exam – that they have the necessary knowledge to credibly practice in the field of biotherapies.
