Pampee Young, MD, PhD, is the chief medical and scientific officer at the American Red Cross Biomedical Division. In this position, she provides leadership for a team of physicians and the scientific affairs department, focusing on enhancing blood safety. Additionally, Young oversees the Transfusion Innovation Department, a unit dedicated to the development of innovative blood products and devices.
Prior to her tenure at the American Red Cross, Young served as a tenured professor at Vanderbilt Medical Center. During her time there, she served as the director of transfusion medicine and cell therapy. Additionally, she led an externally funded research program, which successfully secured more than $40 million in grant funding during her tenure to support her team’s research in wound healing. The results provided the foundation for a groundbreaking venture, which now forms the technological backbone of a startup called Eluciderm.
Young's contributions to the medical field have been documented in the more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts which she has coauthored. She also lends her expertise as a member of various editorial boards and advisory committees within the field. Her current research and leadership pursuits include developing the role of large blood collectors in public health and community safety in a myriad of ways.
