NC Governor Signs Bill Requiring Parental Permission for Blood Donation

July 11, 2023

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper signed bipartisan legislation that bars anyone younger than age 18 from donating blood without the permission of a parent or guardian, the Winston-Salem Journal reported last week. The legislation (Senate Bill 389) unanimously passed both chambers of the North Carolina Legislature last month. State law currently allows those aged 16 years to donate blood with parental permission while 17-year-olds can give blood without parental permission.
