Comments on Proposed Interim Standards Focusing on Cold-Stored Platelets Due Oct. 13

October 05, 2023

AABB is seeking public comment on proposed interim standards that focus on the use and manufacture of cold-stored platelets for the 33rd edition of Standards for Blood Banks and Transfusion Services (BB/TS Standards).

The AABB Blood Bank/Transfusion Service Standards Committee (BB/TS SC) proposed to edit and create new standards focused on the use and manufacture of cold-stored platelets in response to a June 2023 Food and Drug Administration guidance for industry. The guidance allows blood banks and transfusion services to support the manufacture of cold-stored platelets and provides information about the manufacture, process validation, quality control, storage and handling of these products.

The BB/TS SC proposes revisions to the BB/TS Standards in the component preparation section and in the reference standard focused on storage, transport and expiration. The interim standard additions and revisions are available on the AABB website.

To comment on the proposed changes, please submit comments via Jotform or via email to standards@aabb.org by Oct. 13. After that date, the BB/TS SC will review all comments and make any edits deemed appropriate. Once finalized, the committee will incorporate the interim standards into the 33rd edition and the forthcoming 34th edition of BB/TS Standards.
