AABB Foundation Launches New Process Development Grant

July 03, 2024

The AABB Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of the Process Development Grant, a new funding opportunity that aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of blood- and biotherapies-related processes and operations in donor and patient care settings.

This grant, made possible by contributions from the AABB Foundation’s Council on Research and Development (CORD) and other Foundation supporters, will provide up to $100,000 for a one-year project. The Process Development Grant is distinct from the longstanding Early-Career Scientific Research Grants Program, which the AABB Foundation will continue to support.

The Process Development Grant focuses on supporting improvements to business operations through the development, implementation and analysis of innovative processes, techniques or technologies. Examples of eligible projects include models to streamline operations, strategies to optimize donor engagement and retention, research in new or existing diagnostic tools, and process validation for quality improvement. The grant will prioritize projects that demonstrate potential for widespread dissemination and adoption within the broader blood and biotherapies community.

“Fostering innovation is a core element of AABB Foundation’s mission, and the new Process Development Grant will enable blood banks, clinical labs, and other medical centers to optimize the important work they do every day for the benefit of patients and donors,” said AABB Foundation President Jose Cancelas, MD, PhD, CABP. “It is only with the extremely generous support of our many individual and organizational partners that we’re able to offer funding for a new initiative like the Process Development Grant.”

The application period for this grant began Monday and closes Dec. 1. The AABB Foundation invites professionals from across the blood and biotherapies community, including those at any career level and those working outside of the United States, to apply. Applicants need not be AABB members to qualify.

The institutions recognized among AABB Foundation’s funding partners include the American Red Cross, Beckman Coulter, Blood Centers of America, Coastal Blood Foundation, Fresenius Kabi, Grifols, New York Blood Center, QuidelOrtho, Roche, Santa Barbara Foundation, Topeka Community Foundation and Vitalant.

Since 1983, the AABB Foundation has awarded more than $11 million in grants to fund the research work of over 200 scientists, many of whom have gone on to become expert leaders in the blood and biotherapies field.
