Investigators from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention joined the Transfusion Monthly Podcast to discuss a study that examines data reported to the National Healthcare Safety Network Hemovigilance Module. This study focused on transfusion-related errors, associated adverse reactions and blood product wastage.
In this episode, Joel L. Chavez Ortiz, MPH, and Sridhar V. Basavaraju, MD, joined host Yara Park, MD, to discuss the role of technology and data sharing in reducing sample collection errors and enhancing blood transfusion safety. The conversation highlighted the prevalence of transfusion-related errors and adverse events and underscored the need for better reporting requirements.
Chavez Ortiz and Basavaraju emphasized increasing the generalizability of data and encouraging broader participation from various facilities. In addition, they highlighted educational initiatives as a key strategy to minimize process-related errors and discussed the underrepresentation of certain regions of the U.S. They also addressed the relevance of state reporting requirements and the errors identified during the first two years of the study period.
