Monthly Platelet and Group O Survey Report Now Includes July-September Data

January 08, 2025

AABB updated its interactive Monthly Platelet and Group O Survey Report with data from July to September 2024 (Q3). The report provides an overview of the current state of the U.S. blood utilization, focusing on red blood cells (RBCs), platelets and group O RBC components.

Key findings from Q3 include:

  • The average transfusion volumes for RBCs, group O-positive RBCs, group O-negative RBCs and platelets were lower in Q3 compared with Q2 (April to June).
  • The average RBC units wasted by participating hospitals decreased between Q3 and Q2.
  • The average platelet wastage rate was higher in Q3 than Q2.  Variations in wastage rates are influenced by factors such as expiration dates, hospital characteristics, ability to return units, canceled procedures and inventory management systems.
  • The proportion of hospitals receiving low-yield platelets in Q3 ranged from 13.6% to 17.1%. The overall proportion was higher in Q3 compared with Q2, with the highest proportion observed in August.
The PDF of the current survey report, instructions to navigate the report and the data use request form are available on the report web page.

AABB encourages members to review the full report online for a detailed analysis and to use the interactive tool to further explore the data. AABB has added a new field (year) to allow users to filter 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 data.
Stratified data based on hospital size will be provided separately in the benchmark reports distributed to participating hospitals.
