Tanzania Reports Marburg Virus Outbreak

January 29, 2025

Tanzania has reported an outbreak of Marburg virus disease (MVD) in the country’s Kagera region following laboratory confirmation of two suspected cases. This marks the country’s second documented outbreak of MVD. As of Jan. 23, 29 suspected cases have been reported and 281 contacts remain under observation.

MVD is a rare but severe viral hemorrhagic fever transmitted to humans through contact with infected bats or the bodily fluids of infected individuals. It can also spread via contaminated objects. While highly fatal, there have been no documented cases of transfusion-transmission of MVD.

Additional information about MVD is available on AABB’s Marburg Virus Fact Sheet.
