BD Recalls Lot of ChloraPrep Clear Applicators Due to Fungal Contamination
February 19, 2025
Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) announced a
voluntary recall of one lot of ChloraPrep Clear 1 mL Applicators due to fungal contamination under certain environmental conditions allowing the growth of
Aspergillus penicillioides. The affected lot (3200240), distributed globally beginning in September 2023, can be identified by the catalog and lot number on the lidding of the product package and the side of the individual shelf and shipper boxes.
According to BD, A. penicillioides within the packaging may contaminate the applicator's surface or the hands of health care professionals, potentially introducing the fungus into sterile fields. Contaminated applicators could lead to serious infections including sepsis, illness and death.
To date, BD has not received reports of adverse events related to this issue. However, distributors have been instructed to identify all customers within their distribution network that may have purchased the affected product listed in the recall. Health care facilities should check their inventory, discontinue use of the affected lot and destroy any remaining units according to facility protocols. If immediate disposal is not possible, the affected product should be quarantined.
Customers with questions related to the recall may contact BD via
email.
