March Issue of AABB News Explores Innovative Solutions to Meet Global Blood Needs

March 18, 2025

The March issue of AABB News explores the urgent need to address blood shortages around the world, with a focus on innovative programs and research efforts aimed at improving access to safe blood.

This month’s first feature examines the maternal mortality rates in low- and middle-income countries and explores solutions to expand access to blood transfusions for expectant mothers in these regions. Another feature covers the BLOODSAFE program in Kenya, which is working to identify and address gaps in the availability of safe blood for patients suffering from severe anemia and hemorrhagic conditions.

This issue also includes a compelling Q&A with filmmaker Jon Kasbe, who discusses his documentary “Blood Rider.” The short film follows a group of blood delivery drivers in Nigeria and offers a unique look at the challenges of transporting life-saving blood in remote areas. Additionally, in this month’s “White Coats” interview, AABB speaks with Marie Paul Nisingizwe, MSc, PhD, about leveraging translational research to strengthen health systems globally.
