The United States Senate confirmed Marty Makary, MD, MPH, FACS, as the next commissioner of food and drugs on Tuesday by a
56-44 vote. Makary, a surgical oncologist at Johns Hopkins University, has authored two
New York Times bestsellers on health policy and served in leadership positions at the World Health Organization's Patient Safety Program. He succeeds Robert M. Califf, MD.
The Senate also confirmed Jay Bhattacharya, MD, PhD, on Tuesday to serve as the next director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by a
53-47 vote. Bhattacharya is a professor of medicine at Stanford University and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economics Research.
