  • Program Description

Clinical medicine is rife with ethical issues. Even though the laboratory is largely removed from direct patient-facing care, ethical issues commonly arise. Having a framework for identifying, analyzing, and resolving ethical dilemmas is key to ensuring excellent patient care and a safe environment for laboratory staff. Using case scenarios, this program will introduce two moral method frameworks to assist with analyzing and resolving ethical dilemmas in transfusion medicine.

    Learning Objectives

After participating in this educational activity, participants should be able to:

    • Identify two moral method frameworks (the Four-Box Method and the Stakeholders, Facts, Norms and Options [SFNO]).
    • Contrast strengths and weaknesses of the two moral method frameworks.
    • Apply the moral frameworks to organize relevant information for two transfusion medicine-related ethical scenarios.
